The Class 1A No. 13 Turkey Valley boys cross country team made a statement in its first meet of the season.
The Trojans, who had just three harriers on the course who ran a year ago, finished first in team standings at MFL, winning with 42 points. They bested Central, which is ranked No. 10 in Class 1A, and North Fayette Valley, another power school.
The Trojans had three runners in the top-10 and five in the top-20.
In addition, two girls competed at MFL, with both in the top-25 out of 74 runners.
"This was the first varsity race for many of our boys. Our boys seemed to handle that pressure well," said Coach Timothy Kruckman. "It was a hilly course, and all of the times looked to be modest, but we were really pleased with the results."
On the boys side, junior Class 1A No. 21 Ryan Izer finished third out of 78, posting a time of 18:17. Right behind him was senior Steven Landa. In his first high school cross country meet, Landa was fourth in 18:33. Fellow senior Nick Meirick toured the course in 19:36, taking seventh.
