For the first time all season, the Class 3A No. 1 Decorah football team (11-0) took the field trailing.
Decorah’s Josey Jewell was a man possessed on the field Monday night in the Class 3A second round of the playoffs. Jewell rushed for 156 yards and led the team with 10 tackles. He is pictured gaining ground with help from blockers Drew Schwartz (No. 25) and James Ostlie. (Photo by Rick Fromm)
And even that didn't stop them.
The Vikes rattled off 35 unanswered points Monday night in the Class 3A second round of the playoffs, sending Solon (8-3) packing with a 35-10 loss.
Decorah moves into the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, against Central Clinton De Witt (8-3).
The Vikes have been to the quarterfinals five straight years and seven of the last nine seasons (2004, '05, '08, '09, '10, '11, '12). They own a 37-16 playoff record.
All it took was one Solon drive resulting in a field goal to unleash the Decorah wrath - and in particular, Josey Jewell.
Solon took 14 plays to go 70 yards, with the Vikes stopping the Spartans on the 5-yard line and forcing a 22-yard field goal.
"I thought it was a victory on our part that we were able to hold them to just three points, the way they marched the ball down the field on us with four completed passes and a couple of runs," said Head Coach Bill Post, who picked up win No. 151. "To me, it was a great statement on the part of our defense."
