Improvement was the big word for the Decorah boys tennis team this weekend.
Friday the Vikings traveled across the Iowa/Minnesota border to take on Austin. Using their rules of four singles and three doubles matches, with no player playing both singles and doubles, the Vikings fell to Austin 5-2.
"This stretches Decorah's depth to have 10 varsity performers when we normally only need six," said Coach Reg Laursen. "Even with that, the match was very competitive in all categories except two. Our strength was in our doubles. We competed better at singles than the last time against a large school but came up empty. To help remedy that deficiency we need to work more on singles strategy, being patient, put away skills and waiting for the right opportunity to be aggressive."
Decorah's two wins both came in doubles play. C.J. Cliff and Gable Lonning combined at the No. 1 spot to defeat Ethan Larson and Nick Brehmer 6-1, 6-2. At the No. 2 spot, T.J. Misseldine and Karl Sand knocked off Owen Nelson and Sawyer Meyers 6-3, 7-6(7-4).
