Looking to gain some momentum before the start of the playoffs, the South Winn softball team (11-19) hosted Decorah (13-16) Wednesday night in non-conference action.

The Vikings, who are in Class 4A, jumped out to an early lead and held off the home team, winning 5-3.

Decorah started the game strong, getting a run in the top of the first. After holding off the Warriors in their half of the inning, the Vikes put up two more runs in the second to lead 3-1. Neither team was able to score a run in the third or fourth. Once in the top of the fifth, the Vikings again scratched across a run. With the sun going down, the Vikings put across a final run in the top of the seventh, building the lead to 5-0. That was when the Warrior offense woke up. With just three outs remaining in the game, the Warriors scored three runs before the Viking defense got on track and got the final out.
