The Vikings return four letter winners and have a host of athletes hungry to get a turn on the court.
Excited to get the season started is Head Coach Larry Berland, who in 37 years has put together a 380-78 record.
The big three
The Vikings of 2013 featured three returning letter winners – Brianna Carolan, Maddie Grimm and Claire Breitenstein. Those three formed the nucleus of a team of nearly 40 athletes eager to bring home a victory.
Decorah worked on finding a cohesive group throughout the season, with several netters stepping up.
In the team regional play, the Vikings started by defeating Grundy Center 5-1, with wins by Grimm, C. Breitenstein, Laura Munkel, Noreen Gentry and Katie Whitehill. However, the team came up short against Aplington-Parkersburg, falling 4-5.
That sent the squad into the individual regional tournament. Carolan and Grimm combined in doubles action but were forced to withdraw from the competition early due to an injury. Emily Alcock and Gentry lost in the first round of doubles action while singles players C. Breitenstein and Whitewill both fell early in the day.
