Luther college cross country athlete Isaac Jensen has been awarded a 2017 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) awards a one-time, non-renewable educational grant of $7,500 to 58 student-athletes—29 men and 29 women—who competed in fall sports.
To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must be nominated by his or her athletic department, have an overall grade point average of 3.2 (GPA on a 4.0 scale) or its equivalent and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The student-athlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics. The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student. The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women.
Jensen, who has a 3.86 grade point average, is an environmental studies and biology double major and will graduate in May magna cum laude. Next year, he is planning on taking a gap year and beginning the process of applying to graduate schools.
“Isaac has been a remarkable and accomplished athlete while at Luther,” said Rob Larson, Luther vice president and faculty athletic representative. “This award recognizes his leadership, service and scholarship which are equally remarkable.”
During the 2016 cross country season, Jensen earned All-America honors at the NCAA III National Championships, finishing 10th overall from the field of 278 runners. Prior to the national championships, he was named the Iowa Conference MVP after winning the individual title at the IIAC Championships. His all-conference honor (top-15) was the third of his career. He also joined an elite group of Luther runners to earn all-Region honors (top-35) for a third time, finishing second from the field of 207 competitors at the Central Regional.
Academically, Jensen is a three-time Iowa Conference Fall Sports Teams Academic honoree (3.50 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale).
Luther’s long tradition of NCAA postgraduate scholars dates back to 1966. Jensen is Luther’s 40th postgraduate scholar and the 16th in the past 16 years to receive this award.
Jensen, a 2013 graduate of Iowa City West High School, is the son of Chris and Sheral Jensen of Iowa City.
