Luther College captured its fourth Iowa Conference Softball Tournament crown Sunday with a 15-11 win over host Coe College at Clark Field.
The tournament title is the fourth for Luther, all in the last five seasons. The Norse also receive the Iowa Conference’s automatic berth in the 2014 NCAA Division III Softball Championships - familiar territory for a program that has won regional crowns and advance to the championship finals each of the last four seasons.
Luther (30-6) will face Washington-St. Louis (30-15) in the first round of regional play at A.N. Kuyper Athlics Complex at Central College (Pella). The game is set for Friday, May 9, at 3:30 p.m.
The winner moves on to face the winner of Central (30-10) and North Central (Ill., 29-11).
Under the new tournament format, there are 16 regional sites – 14 four-team regionals and two three-team regionals. The 16 regional champs meet in two-team super regionals May 16-17 under a best two-of-three format. The super regional winners advance to the NCAA finals May 22-27 in Tyler, Texas.
Last year Luther finished fifth at the NCAA finals.
