In a battle between two of the top teams in the conference Friday, it was Waverly-Shell Rock (7-4, 3-2 NEIC) that came out on top of the Decorah boys team (5-4, 3-3 NEIC), 55-39.
Decorah fell behind early to the Go-Hawks, trailing 17-7 after the first eight minutes. Decorah came back firing in the second quarter, outscoring the Go-Hawks by five to make it 21-26 at the half. The battle of the third quarter went to Waverly as the Go-Hawks pushed ahead 39-28. Waverly-Shell Rock bested Decorah in the final frame 18-11.
"We spotted Waverly way too many points early, and we cannot do that against good teams," said Decorah Coach Jonathan Carlson. "To our kids' credit, they continued to battle throughout and cut the lead to four points on a few occasions. We have to continue to keep our heads up and not allow this tough week to affect us going forward."
