It was a tough homecoming for the Decorah freshmen football team (2-4) as the Vikes lost to Vinton-Shellsburg 32-14 in Decorah Friday.
"We just made several mistakes again that we have been unable to overcome," said Coach Scott Pierce.
V-S took an early 8-0 lead in the first. Decorah responded with a Cole Steffen to Garrett Wise 64-yard pass. With Zach Lea's PAT it was 8-7 Vinton-Shellsburg. The visitors scored one more time to make it 14-7 at the half. V-S added a third score in the third frame and outscored the Vikes 12-7 in the fourth.
"We struggled again with blocking and tackling. On the plus side, our special teams have improved lately," said Pierce. "We will need to continue to work on the basics of football."
The Vikes had 254 offensive yards. Steffen completed 4-of-10 passes and two touchdowsn. Wise had both TDs while also rushing for 69 yards. Lea caught one pass for 14 yards. He also punted four times for 87 yards.
Wise led all tacklers with eight solo and 10 assisted stops. Lea had four solo and nine assisted tackles. Marshall Johnson made one solo and six assists while Steffen had one solo and four assisted stops, to go with one interception.
The freshmen host Crestwood Thursday, Oct. 4, at 6 p.m.
