The Decorah freshman football team (4-1) is on a four-game win streak after defeating West Delaware 34-6 Thursday night in Manchester.
The Vikes broke through with 14 points in the first quarter on a Paul Strand to Shawn Shindelar 64-yard touchdown pass and a Strand to Jacob Roher 32-yard pass, with Shindelar scoring the two-point play. The Vikes scored three TDs in the third on a Roher 75-yard kickoff return, a Brent Schaeffer 5-yard run and a Michael DeVore 63-yard score.
"We played a very strong football team tonight, both from a physical execution standpoint as well as mentally. We were tough and disciplined," said Coach Scott Pierce. "Our kickoff and kickoff return teams were also very good. Our kickoff team tackled very well. Our linemen controlled the line of scrimmage all night, both offensively and defensively."
Strand completed 2-of-4 passes for 96 yards. M. DeVore rushed three times for 70 yards while Schaeffer rushed 15 times for 59 yard. Shindelar picked up 47 yards rushing and had one receiving touchdown. Defensively, Brendan Numedahl had three solo and three assisted stops while Cade Klimesh and Dawson Meyer both were there for five stops. Ben Leschensky and Roher each had an interception.
Decorah is off next week because of low numbers for Vinton-Shellsburg. Decorah is at Crestwood Thursday, Oct. 10.
