The Decorah freshman football team (1-0) started the season strong with a 26-0 win at North Fayette Valley Friday.
Decorah started the game strong with a Brannan Hogan to Jake Muhlbauer 23-yard touchdown. Thomas Knocke scored the two-point play to make it 8-0. In the second quarter, the Vikes scored on a safety and then Muhlbauer scored on a 16-yard rush, with Hogan scoring the PAT. Muhlbauer took the second half kickoff 83 yards for the score. The Vikes also scored on a safety when Knoke tackled the TigerHawk runner in the end zone.
“This was a pretty good start to the season,” said Coach Scott Pierce. “We played well, committed only one penalty, posted a shutout and had every player into the game before halftime. Certainly we hope to improve upon blocking and tackling.”
Muhlbauer scored three touchdowns in his high school debut, with 33 yards rushing, 142 kickoff yards and one reception. Hogan completed two passes for 40 yards. The defense was led by Nathan Tappe, with eight solo tackles and four assists. Andy Lillegraven had four solo stops. Jonah Johnson recorded an interception and Chase Hubka had a fumble recovery.
