It was a tough night on the field for the Decorah freshman football team (4-2) as the Vikes fell to Vinton-Shellsburg 22-6 Friday night.
Decorah trailed 8-0 at the end of the first and 16-0 at the half. The lone TD came in the third when Brent Schaeffer scored on a 1-yard run. The two-point try failed.
"We did not play well in the first half and got shoved quite a bit. However, we did manage to do some things well in the second half and drew to within 10 points by the end of the third. We had to go for it on fourth down late in the game and threw an interception for a TD," said Coach Scott Pierce. "After a couple of key injuries last week at West Delaware, we are going to need to continue to get some new guys some more reps in practice, but they played pretty well."
Quarterback Mathew Fullhart completed 2-of-5 passes for 45 yards. Brendan Numedahl rushed seven times for 39 yards. Michael DeVore rushed three times for 30 yards. Derek Hendrickson and Schaeffer both caught one pass.
On defense, Adam Hovden had five solo and three assisted tackles. Numedahl had four solo and three assisted tackles. Jacob Roher had four solo and one assisted tackle, as did Cade Klimesh. Isaiah Mitchell had two fumble recoveries.
The Vikes are at Cresco Thursday, Oct. 10, at 6 p.m.
