It was a back and forth battle Thursday night in Cresco as the Decorah freshman football team (4-3) fell to the Crestwood Cadets 28-46.

The Vikes scored first on a Brent Schaeffer 1-yard run, with Schaeffer kicking the PAT. Decorah added a Schaeffer 33-yard field goal in the second but trailed 16-10 at the half. Decorah picked up two scores in the third - a Mathew Fulhart 1-yard run and a Michael DeVore 55-yard rush but trialed 30-22 with a quarter remaining. They drew to 30-28 with a Fulhart to Derek Hendrickson 35-yard TD pass, but that was a close as it got.

"This was a very physical freshman game. We were without several starters and lost a couple more and yet the next man in provided us with solid play. We tried to tackle a couple hard-running Crestwood backs a bit too heigh, but we played hard and we were very physical ourselves," said Coach Scott Pierce. "Our offensive line was very solid early on. Pass blocking and run blocking were very solid for most of the night. We did a lot of good things. We made big strides in physicality and in getting lots of guys solid game action."

Fulhart completed 6-for-11 passes for 101 yards. M. DeVore rushed three times for 90 yards while Brendan Numedahl rushed nine times for 31 yards. Hendrickson had two receptions for 66 yards. On defense, Numedahl had seven solo and one assisted tackle. Adam Hovden had two solo and four assisted stops. Jacob Roher had a fumble recovery, and Ben Leschensky made an interception.
