The Decorah freshman football team (3-4) got back on track Thursday night as it defeated Crestwood 14-0 at home.
The Vikes took the lead just before halftime on a Garrett Wise 4-yard run, with Zach Lea kicking the extra point. In the third quarter, quarterback Cole Steffen found Logan Etie for the 30-yard score, again with Lea's kick.
"By far our best performance of the year," said Head Coach Scott Pierce. "We played smart, tough football. Our blocking and tackling was much better. We also had some tremendous play out of our kickoff and kickoff return teams. We have several kids who only play on special teams, but those few plays were very solid tonight."
The Vikes had 254 yards of total offense. Steffen completed 3-of-4 passes for 89 yards. Marshall Johnson completed his only pass attempted for 35 yards. Lea caught two passes for 59 yards while Etie caught two passes for 65 yards.
Wise rushed 18 times for 101 yards.
On defense, Wise had two solo and 13 assisted tackles, along with a fumble recovery. Steffen was in on one solo and eight assisted tackles. Lea made one solo and four assisted stops. Johnson made an interception, and Brad Corrigan had a sack.
The Vikes are off this week as Oelwein had too many injuries to field a freshman team. The freshmen conclude the season Thursday, Oct. 18, at Western Dubuque, beginning at 6 p.m.
