A year removed from the big meet, the Decorah boys swim team is headed back to the big stage of the state meet.

The Vikings had three relays and one individual qualify for the state meet from the district meet, held Saturday at Cedar Falls. It's the first time since 2011 the Vikes have had more than one individual move on.

The state meet is Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Marshalltown YMCA beginning at 12:30 p.m.

The big four

The first-place finish in each event from each of the six district sites automatically qualifies for state. The next 18 best times from across the state also advance, making 24 entries per event for the state meet.

All three relays made a splash by qualifying based on time.

The 200-yard medley relay of junior Jerod Heying, junior Mac Faldet, sophomore Rjis Nesset and senior Cole Svestka posted splits of 26.86, 27.93, 24.80 and 22.97 to finish fourth overall in 1:42.56. The relay is seeded 19th overall. The fastest time is held by Iowa City West, with a time to beat of 1:36.41.

The 200 freestyle relay finished third overall in 1:30.53, earning a spot at state. The relay was composed of Svestka (23.60), Isaac Sauer (junior, 22.51), Heying (21.92) and Nolan Heffern (junior, 22.50). Based on the times posted Saturday, Decorah is seeded 15th for the state meet. The fastest time is 1:26.28, held by West Des Moines Valley.

Sauer, Heying, Heffern and Faldet combined in the 400 freestyle relay to make it to state. With times of 52.45, 52.70, 50.64 and 51.25, the Vikes finished fifth in 3:27.04 Saturday. Decorah has the 22nd fastest time in this event. West Des Moines Valley has the fastest time at 3:11.76.

Faldet is the lone Viking competing as an individual at state. Faldet posted splits of 29.54 and 32.60 in the 100-yard breaststroke to finish third in 1:02.14 Saturday. Faldet enters state with the 22nd fastest time. Justin Winnet of Johnston has the fastest time of 57.57 seconds.
