The season got off to a strong start Tuesday for the Decorah boys and girls cross country teams.

Both squads claimed titles at the Oelwein Invite.

The boys took first with 39 points. Denver was second with 57. The girls had just 20 points to take first. West Delaware was second with 96 points.

For the boys, Forde Nesteby led the way by taking third overall in 17:08. Also contributing to the team score were Isaac Marquardt, fifth, 17:11; Oran Deen-Lester, seventh, 17:13; Andrew Larson, ninth, 17:16; and Garrett Nordheim, 15th, 17:46. Jacob Hrdlicka (21st, 18:05) and Jacob Stock (34th, 18:47), also ran for the varsity.

"We are off to a great start," said boys coach Dennis Evelsizer. "We are showing great potential. Our entire team average for this race was better than last year."

The girls were led by junior Amanda Taylor, who was the overall champion in 15:19. Teammate Linnea Kephart was right behind her, in second in 15:22. Alo running for the varsity were Kelly Minear, fourth, 15:34; Gara Lonning, sixth, 15:39; Stefanie Bjerke, seventh, 15:44; Maria McDonough, 20th, 16:21; and Hannah Hogen, 23rd, 16:33.

"I was pleased with the overall performance of our team," said girls coach Cristy Nimrod. "I felt we ran in good packs and pushed through the finish."
