The Decorah girls track team will have strength in numbers and talent this spring.
With over 70 athletes out for the team, including over 20 returning letter winners, the Vikings look to be one of the toughest teams in the area, if not the state.
Looking to mold the team into a title contender is Dana Hogan, who enters her 12th season leading the Vikings. Assisting her are Brad Johansen and Jess Tangen, with Molly Holkesvik as a volunteer coach.
In 2012 the Vikings had another solid team. The Vikes put things together, taking first in the final seven scored meets of the year.
At the Northeast Iowa Conference Meet, the Vikes took first for the eighth year in a row, posting 175 points. In total, two individuals claimed four golds, with Jackie Hoyme taking the discus and the shot put while Marea Holkesvik won the 400-meter run and 400-meter hurdles.
Hosting the state qualifying meet, the Vikes again outran the competition, taking first with 184 points. It was the eighth year in a row the Vikes have won the meet. In total, 17 entries moved on to state.
Competing on the blue oval, the Vikings put together a top-10 finish, taking 10th with 24 points. Three events finished in the top four overall. Shana Kelly took fourth in the 3000-meter run. Hoyme closed out her career by taking fourth in the discus. The 4x800 of Amanda Taylor, Kaitlyn Kregel, Kelly and Holkesvik took fourth as well.
