The South Winn baseball team was just three outs away from punching a ticket to the Class 2A substate round.

Instead, it watched as North Fayette celebrated a 9-8 extra innings victory Saturday night, ending the Warriors' season.

North Fayette (23-19) advances to face Dyersville Beckman (34-7) tonight (Tuesday). South Winn ends the year 25-12.

What happened

It was a thriller from the opening pitch. The Warriors, the visitor in Calmar, started things with an infield single by Colton Hageman. Senior Dylan Humpal drove him in for the game's first run.

North Fayette answered with a run in bottom half of the inning when the state's all-time leading hitter Jake Greco doubled and scored on a single by Tom Heying.

The Hawks took the lead in the bottom of the second when three Warrior errors and a double by Greco resulted in four runs.

The Warriors got their mojo back in the top of the fifth. With the bases loaded, freshman Jordan Rommes doubled, clearing the bases to make it 5-4 North Fayette.
