Eight locals earn all-UIC

Eight local baseball players were named to the Upper Iowa Conference all-league baseball teams.
Six Warriors and two Trojans were among the honorees.
In addition, four were named all-district.
Garnering first team honors were South Winn’s Trevor Schweinefus and Jordan Rommes and Turkey Valley’s Ryan Busta. All three were also named first team selections in their respective districts.
Schweinefus, a senior pitcher, was named a first team selection in 2013 for the Upper Iowa Conference. This season, he’s compiled a 10-1 record in 64 and 1/3 innings. He has a 1.52 ERA with 73 strikeouts. At the plate, he is hitting .363, with 24 RBI and 28 runs scored. He also is 9-for-9 in stolen bases.
Rommes is a third-time UIC honoree, being named second team in 2012 and first in 2013. The second baseman leads the team in batting average with a .523 mark. He also has a .605 on-base percentage and a 1.037 slugging mark. He is leading Class 2A in home runs with 13. He also has 57 RBI and 56 runs scored, along with 18 stolen bases.
Ry. Busta is honored for the first time in the Upper Iowa Conference. Busta hit .351 for the Trojans, with 32 runs scored, five doubles and 22 RBI. He also was 10-for-10 with stolen bases. The senior, who saw time on the pitching mound in addition to at shortstop, was 4-4 on the mound, with a 3.28 ERA and 56 strikeouts.
Named second team UIC were South Winn’s Christian Kleve, Tyler Numedahl and Jared Schroeder. Kleve was named honorable mention in 2013 while Schroeder was a second team selection. It is Numedahl’s first honor.
Kleve, a junior catcher, is hitting .372 this season, with a .539 on-base percentage and a .457 slugging mark. He has 15 runs scored, five doubles and 33 RBI. He’s also walked 27 times.
At third base, Numedahl is hitting .409. The junior also has compiled a .480 on-base percentage and a .518 slugging average. He has 45 hits, with 32 runs scored, six doubles and 36 RBI.
Schroeder, a senior outfield, was named second team all-district. He has a .330 batting average. At the leadoff spot, he has a .469 on-base percentage, along with 51 runs scored, four doubles and 20 RBI. He’s also stolen 22-of-24 bases.
South Winn’s Wyatt Opperman and Turkey Valley’s Michael Novotny were both named honorable mention UIC. It was Opperman’s first and Novotny’s second after being named honorable mention last season.
Opperman has an 8-0 record through 52 and 1/3 innings. He leads the team in ERA with a 0.80 mark, along with 29 strikeouts.
Novotny saw time on the pitcher’s mound, as well as all over the field. He was second on the team in runs scored with 36 and led the way in batting average with a .370 mark. He had 12 doubles and drove in 26.
