There were tears of joy, exhaustion, satisfaction, relief and a few of bittersweet sadness Saturday as the Decorah girls and boys cross country teams accomplished something that had only been done once in school history - both came home with first place trophies at the state cross country meet.
Both teams, which each went into the meet ranked No.1, stood alone on the deck in Fort Dodge in their respective Class 3A races.
The only other time both teams claimed team titles was in 1976. It's the 14th time since 1966 both squads from the class have won titles.
With the victories, the girls claimed their fifth state title in school history - 1976, '80, '82 and '07. Last year the girls were fifth.
The boys have now won a state-record 15 titles - 1957 '58, '59, '64, '66, '67, '68, '72, '74, '76, '77, '78, '90 and '92. Last year they claimed their fourth runner-up finish in school history.
Although there were lots of reasons to celebrate, the day had one dark cloud as one of their teammates was injured and unable to complete the race.
