Thirteen seconds were all the Warriors needed as the Class 1A No. 4 South Winn football team (5-0, 3-0 district) defeated Saint Ansgar (3-2, 0-2 district) 58-14 Friday night.

The Warriors, who are ranked No. 4 by the Cedar Rapids Gazette and No. 3 by the Des Moines Register, scored 30 points in the second quarter.

Fireworks early

Things got started quickly for the Warriors when junior Jordan Rommes, who leads the entire state in receiving yards by nearly 200 yards and is tied for the most receiving touchdowns, took the opening kickoff and thanks to great blocking, went 96 yards to the house. The two-point try failed, making it 6-0 South Winn just 13 seconds in.

"We had a great second wedge on the opening kickoff, and Jordan Rommes did the rest to open the game. That momentum carried over to the defense, and I thought we did a nice job defending Saint Ansgar's rushing attack most of the night," said Coach Jason Ohrt.
