Three touchdowns in just over three minutes propelled the Class 3A No. 3 Decorah football team (6-0, 3-0 district) to its 20th win in a row, this time a 35-0 victory over Vinton-Shellsburg (2-4, 1-3 district) Friday night in Vinton.
Decorah, ranked No. 3 by the Cedar Rapids Gazette and No. 4 by the Des Moines Register, had two passing touchdowns on the way to the victory. Iowa City Regina, which holds the longest win streak in the state, also won Friday night, leaving Decorah with the second longest win streak.
Putting the game away
Decorah took the opening kickoff, with Jake Hovden returning it to the Decorah 35. The Vikes drove down the field, with a Mikhail Suvorov 14-yard run, a Bryce Pierce to Cole Roher 13-yard pass and Holt Johansen putting the pigskin in the end zone on a 29-yard run.
Vinton went three and out, giving Decorah the ball on their own 30. On the next play, Pierce found Kyle Kane open for the 70-yard bomb for the score. With another Andy Sikkink kick, it was 14-0 Decorah with 7:43 left in the first.
