Decorah graduate Bryce Pierce received the Iowa Golf Association’s Herman Sani Scholarship, presented at the annual banquet Friday, Aug. 8, in Johnston.
Pierce was one of four recipients.
The award is $2,000 per year for all four years. The criteria for selection include the student’s academic record, school accomplishments, letters of reference and achieving success in the game of golf. All four boys chosen this year were named first team all-state by the IAHSGCA during their senior seasons.
Other honorees were Edward Doyle of Fort Dodge, Andrew Huseman of Ankeny and Zach Ward of Waterloo.
The award also comes with complimentary entry into the IGA’s Herman Sani Tournament at Hyperion Field Club. Pierce shot 83-73 for 156 but missed the cut of 148 (par was 72-72-144). Zach Johnson won the Herman Sani Open in 2000 before going on to PGA Tour fame.
Pierce, the son of Scott and Lori Pierce, has enrolled at Luther College, where he will pursue a degree in education
The Herman Sani Tournament began in 1950 and has become one of the major championships on the Iowa Golf Association schedule.
After being run by the staff and members at Hyperion, the IGA took over administration duties in 2013. The tournament brings together the state’s top amateurs and professionals in a 54-hole championship. Past winners include many players who went on to fame on the PGA and Champions Tours, including 2007 Masters Champion Zach Johnson (2000 Champion).
Decorah’s Andrew Peter, a 2010 graduate and 2014 grad of Luther, won the award in 2010.
