At the conclusion of the first day at the state track meet, the Decorah girls sit in third place in Class 3A.
The girls scored 16 points Thursday. Davenport Assumption is leading the way with 29 points. Dubuque Wahlert is in second with 23 points. Gilbert is a close fourth with 13 points.
The Decorah girls had two events place third Thursday. Junior Kassie Hoyme competed in the discus. She advanced to the finals and claimed third with a best throw of 122 feet, 5 inches. The best came on her last throw of the finals.
Also in third was the 4x800 relay. Teammates Amanda Taylor, Linnea Kephart, Katie Perez and Taylor Schuring had a strong day, taking third in 9:37.97.
"It was slow at the beginning so I just went out," said Taylor.
"We had some really good competition with Assumption and Wahlert," said Kephart. "It really pushed us to have them in front of us and pushed us all to have a good race."
Schuring also scored some individual points. In the 400-meter run, Schuring came in fifth in 58.07 seconds.
The shuttle hurdle relay will be competing in the finals. Olivia Sandvig, Kephart, Kylie Kerndt and Shaylan Martin had the seventh-best time in the prelims in 1:07.79, a new school record. The finals are around 11:10 a.m. Saturday.
Also Thursday, senior Alexis Hove just missed the finals in the 100-meter dash. She came in ninth in the prelims in 12.89 seconds. She finished 0.04 seconds from moving on.
Class 3A action starts with field events at 2 p.m. Friday and running events at 2:40 p.m.
