The opportunity was there, but the Decorah baseball team (15-10, 9-7 NEIC) couldn’t capitalize Thursday night when it hosted league-leading Class 3A No. 2 Waverly-Shell Rock (25-1, 13-1 NEIC).

Decorah dropped both contests of the double header by one run.
In the first game, Decorah fell 4-3. The Vikes put up two runs in the third. Both squads scored one in the sixth, but the Go-Hawks didn’t give up. To start the seventh, the Go-Hawks got a runner on with a walk. That was followed by two singles, a double and another single. Those four hits produced three runs. Decorah went down in order in the bottom half of the frame.
The Vikings had just five hits. Jake Hovden had two of them, both singles. Collin Nimrod, Austin Ashbacher and Bryton Meyer had the others. Nimrod picked up the only RBI.
Ashbacher started the game. He went 5 1/3 innings, giving up one run. Nimrod closed the game.
“Austin as the starting pitcher did a nice job. He walkd too many, but he did a really good job of battling on the mound,” said Coach Dennis Olejniczak. “Truly we had a chance to get out of the seventh inning with two out when we misplayed a line drive ball in the outfield that had we stepped correctly on the initial ball coming off the bat, we had a chance to catch the ball, but it was hit hard, and we didn’t play it correctly.”
