The Decorah girls soccer team knew it would be an uphill battle Monday night at the Waverly Soccer Complex.
The Vikings were just one game away from the state tournament. However, standing in the way was Class 2A No. 1 Waverly-Shell Rock. The Go-Hawks had just two losses on the season and had defeated Decorah by a combined 15-0 in their previous two contests.
Decorah came out strong and battled throughout the entire 80 minutes, giving the Go-Hawks everything they had.
Unfortunately for fans of the blue and red, Decorah came up short, falling 8-2 in the regional final.
Waverly-Shell Rock (18-2) advances to the state tournament, held June 12-14 at Cownie Park in Des Moines. The Go-Hawks first face Ankeny (8-7) Thursday, June 12, at 3 p.m.
The Vikings end the season 6-13. The loss snaps a three-game win streak.
