After falling behind early to a Winneshiek County rival, the Decorah softball team (3-7) pounded the ball for 14 runs to defeat Turkey Valley (3-7) 14-4 Tuesday night in Decorah.
Turkey Valley got on the board first. The Trojans clawed for two runs in the first inning, thanks to an error and a passed ball. However, the Vikings got things going in the third inning. Tori Hartman started them off, getting on base to start the inning. Lindsay Smith dropped a perfect bunt, reaching first safely. Then with Chelsey Twait at-bat, the junior belted a shot easily over the outfield fence for a three-run home run, to give Decorah a lead. The Vikes got one more run across home plate before the final out was recoded to make it 4-2.
The Trojans got two runs back in the fourth inning to make it 4-4. However, the bottom of the fourth was a big one for Decorah as the team plated eight runs to go ahead 12-4. Decorah scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game early.
