It was a hot and busy night on the course in Waverly as the Class 3A No. 1 Decorah boys and girls cross country teams competed at the Dick Pollitt Go-Hawk Classic.
The Classic is different from other cross country meets in that the teams are divided into grades and race against runners only at their level. To form an overall team score, the teams top five runners, with no more than two representatives from each grade level, are combined. Individual grade level races are scored by each team's top three runners at their respective grade.
Second for girls
In the girls race, Decorah, ranked No. 1, finished second overall with 14 team points. Dubuque Hempstead won the meet with 12 points.
In the senior race, the Vikes took second behind Waverly-Shell Rock. Kelly Minear led the way by taking second overall in 16:34. Lydia Hayes took sixth overall in 17:10 while Hannah Hougen was seventh in 17:24.
