Facing some of the best competition in the state Saturday, the Decorah girls swim team held their own in the pool at the Cougar Invite at Cedar Rapids Kennedy.

The Vikings finished tied for fifth with Dubuque Wahlert with 148 points. Cedar Falls won the meet with 570 points.

The Vikes had one relay and one individual finish in fifth for their best place of the day. Individually, Taylor Martinek was fifth in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.82. She was four seconds from first place.

In the relays, Martinek combined with Catherine Gregg, Jennison Jenkins and Katelyn Yee to finish the 200-yard medley relay in 2:02.23 That's an improvement from the seed time of 2:04.63. First place went to Cedar Falls in 1:53.29.

Two other relays finished in the top-10. The 200-free relay of Kathryn Appler, Monica Tappe, Martinek and Yee was seventh in 1:48.68. They were 6.5 seconds from first. Appler, Jenkins, Martinek and Yee combined in the 400-yard free relay to take eighth in 4:03.98.



The Vikes are at the Cedar Falls Invite at Holmes Junior High Saturday, Sept. 29, beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, they host the only home meet of the year, against Charles City at 6 p.m.
