Berland recipient of Golden Plaque of Distinction

Longtime Decorah girls tennis coach Larry Berland is the 2014 Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union's recipient of the Golden Plaque of Distinction for girls' tennis.
Berland was honored Thursday morning at the Class 1A Iowa Girls State Tennis Tournament in Iowa City.
The IGHSAU Golden Plaque of Distinction Award honors the Iowa coach who has demonstrated a successful career while making notable contributions toward school, community and the coaching profession.
Berland completed his 38th season as the girls tennis coach at Decorah this spring. In that span, he has coached 11 state singles place winners, 15 state doubles place winners and has qualified for the state team tournament 13 times with five teams winning state championships. He has also guided five doubles teams to state titles.
Berland has been named State Tennis Coach of the Year, National District Coach of the Year and was a finalist in 2008 and 2014 for National Coach of the Year by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association. He has also served on the IGHSAU Tennis Advisory Committee.
In addition to coaching tennis for Decorah, Berland has also coached girls and boys basketball at the school.
