The Decorah girls soccer team finished fourth at the Waverly-Shell Rock Tournament Saturday, going 1-2.
In the first game the Vikes defeated Des Moines East 2-1, thanks to two goals by sophomore Lauren Bruneau, with an assist from Shelby Stalberger. Goalkeeper Olivia Rauk made four saves.
"Our defense stepped up and played a solid match, and our offense played hungry, especially in the second half, to secure an additional game," said Coach Julie Shockey.
In game two, the Vikes fell to No. 13 Gladbrook-Reinbeck 1-3. Senior captain Brinn Anderson had the only goal, assisted by Stef Bjerke and Stalberger.
"The wind was like having an additional player on the field most of the day-so it often came down to which team was better able to capitalize on that advantage," said Shockey.
In the final game, the Vikes fell to No. 6 Center Point-Urbana 0-1. CPU scored the lone goal in the 55th minute.
"CPU was a very good and very classy team. We really played with them, and had some dangerous opportunities. They ended up pulling one of their defenders up to play forward because they were having so much trouble getting through our defense," said Shockey.
