One bad inning was too much for the Class 3A No. 10 Decorah baseball team (9-5, 5-3 NEIC) to overcome Monday night in conference action as the Vikes fell to Class 3A No. 9 Waverly-Shell Rock (13-2, 6-0 NEIC) 6-1.

Things were going smoothly until the second inning. After a leadoff single, the Vikes got an out. A walk put runners on first and second. After a strike out, the Vikes had two outs in the inning. On a 0-2 count, the batter was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. From there, there was another walk, a double, a single, a pitching change, then another single before the final out was recorded. In total, six Go-Hawks crossed the plate in the inning.

Decorah's lone run came in the bottom of the sixth, with Collin Nimrod driving in Dustin Cary.

There were just four Viking hits in the game. Josey Jewell, Austin Ashbacher, Cary and Eric Smorstad all had singles.
