A basket at the buzzer gave the Deocrah girls basketball team (3-5, 1-1 NEIC) a victory Tuesday night on the road against Charles City (3-3, 1-2 NEIC).
The home team came out firing in the first, outscoring Decorah 9-4 after the first. Decorah battled back in the second. They cut into the lead throughout the frame, taking a 17-16 edge with two minutes remaining. At the half, it was 21-20 Decorah.
Moving into the second half, the Comets took the lead back, going up 28-25 halfway through the third. However, Decorah answered, tying the game at 31-all with eight minutes remaining.
It was back and forth in the fourth, with the Comets holding a 40-38 lead with two minutes remaining. Decorah tied the game with a minute remaining. Decorah fouled Hali Hillegas with about 10 seconds remaining, putting her at the line for the one-and-one. She hit the first free throw but missed the second. However, the Comets rebounded the ball, and Decorah fouled on the rebound.
