All eyes will be on the Vikings this spring.

After claiming the Class 3A state title last year and with many members of that team returning, Decorah will likely be a target on the track this season.

Looking to lead the team to hoisting another title trophy is Head Coach Joel Rollinger. Rollinger has led the Vikes for 14 years and has coached the team for 28 years.

A season never to forget

With lots of potential and goals, the Decorah boys track team didn't let its fans down in 2012. Picking up steam the entire season, the Vikes put all the pieces together at the right time. At the Northeast Iowa Conference meet, the Vikings tasted sweet victory by taking first place with 166 points. It came down to the final event - the 4x400 - for the Vikes to claim the title over defending-champion Waverly-Shell Rock.

Hosting the state qualifying meet, the Vikings won the event for the second year in a row, compiling 163 points. In total, 15 events qualified for the state meet.

On the big stage, the tracksters celebrated. For just the second time in school history, the Vikes walked away with the team title, winning by nearly 20 points. Two events also won individual titles - the 4x800 of Gavin Nimrod, Kyle Hosting, Parker Beard and Kyle Kregel; and the 4x400 of Drew Schwartz, Bjorn Gowdy-Jaehnig, Cole Svestka and Kregel.

In addition, Jacob Humpal took second in the shot put, Hosting was the silver medalist in the 800-meter, the distance medley of Jacob Drost, Svestka, Schwartz and Kregel finished second and Drost took bronze in the high jump.
