The goals came quickly and often for the Deocrah girls soccer team (5-11) Friday night as the Vikes defeated Waterloo East (0-12) 10-0 in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs in Decorah.
Decorah now faces Independence (12-6) today, Tuesday, June 3, in the second round.
Friday night, the Vikes had goals scored from five different players. It all started when Stef Bjerke scored off an assist from Becca Alcock nine minutes into the game. Not even three minutes later, Decorah scored again when East kicked the ball into their own net.
At 13:37, S. Bjerke scored her second goal, this time assisted by sister Cassie Bjerke. C. Bjerke got the ball in the back of the net off an assist from Alcock at 19:00. Alcock took an assist from Kahler Folkedahl at 22:25 to make it 5-0 Decorah. The final two goals of the first half came from Laura Scholz from Isabel Iverson at 34:32 and a header from C. Bjerke from Naomi Davidson at 39:58.
Decorah ended the game nine minutes into the second half. Lindsay Smith scored at 3:40 from an assist from Anja Arend. At 6:05, S. Bjerke scored from an assist from Lauren Bruneau. Bruneau had another assist at 9:10, allowing Scholtz to score.
In total, Decorah had 44 shots on goal. Emily Womeldorf stood in goal.
Decorah has a tough test Tuesday against Independence. On May 6, the Vikes traveled to Independence and lost to the Mustangs 2-0. The winner moves on to the regional final Monday, June 9, at 6 p.m. in Waverly against the winner of Waverly-Shell Rock and South Tama/East Marshall.
