It was supposed to be the game of the week; instead, the Class 3A No. 3 Decorah football team (5-0, 2-0 district) turned the homecoming game into a clinic as the Vikings defeated Class 3A No. 10 West Delaware (4-1, 2-1 district) 41-13 Friday night.

With the win, the Vikings are in control of the district as the only undefeated team. Crestwood is undefeated in the district but has two overall losses.

The homecoming victory also brings the string of wins to 19. The last loss came in the 2011 championship game. The last regular season loss was Sept. 30, 2011, at West Delaware. That brings the regular season win streak to 17.

How it happened

The Vikes scored quickly, used long drives and even utilized the special teams Friday night. They took the opening kickoff and took 15 plays to drive 65 yards, with Holt Johansen scoring from 4 yards away. The kick was no good, making it 6-0 Decorah at the 6:26 drive.

The Hawks' first drive was a failure, with the Vikes taking possession on the West Delaware 17. One play later, Cole Svestka was in the end zone. With the Bryce Pierce kick, it was 13-0.

The Hawks struggled on their next possession, going three and out. Brent Lammers punted the ball 34 yards to the Decorah 40, where Jake Hovden did his thing, going 60 yards for the touchdown, making it 20-0 Decorah with 3:12 left in the first quarter.
