The season came to an abrupt end Friday night for the Luther men's basketball team as the Norse lost to Wartburg 57-62 in the Iowa Conference Tournament semifinals at Luther.
The Norse, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, ended the season 18-8 overall. Wartburg, the No. 4 seed, fell to No. 3-seed Dubuque 73-60 Sunday in the conference finals. Dubuque, which won its first IIAC tournament title, earned the conference's automatic qualifier in the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
Luther's last game
Trailing 34-25 at halftime, the Norse put together a 9-0 run during the first five minutes of the second frame to level the score at 34-34. The Knights answered the Norse run with one of their own and held a 49-40 lead with nine minutes left in the game. Luther made one more run and tied the game at 53-53 with 4:13 left in the game. The tie was the fourth and final of the contest as Wartburg outscored the Norse 9-4 down the stretch to secure the victory.
Wartburg shot 49 percent, including an 8-for-13 performance from behind the three-point line. The Norse finished the game shooting 42 percent but were 4-for-20 from behind the arch.
Tyler Wedemeier completed his career with an 11 point, nine rebound, three block performance. Cale Austin was the only other Norse to tally double digits with 10 off the bench. John Androus chipped in nine, and Zach Matos -Pritchard had eight.
Wartburg's Eddie Diemer led all scorers with 16 points. Brandon Flenor had 14 points and Mitchell Murphy had 11.
