Three Luther College athletes were named athletes of the week by the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Swimmer Clare Slagel was named the female athlete of the week while Jacob Sund was named the men's swimming and diving athlete of the week and Tricia Serres the women's indoor track and field athlete of the week.

Slagel, a sophomore from Dubuque, was named the Female Swimmer of the Year at the Liberal Arts Championships for the second consecutive year, going 7-for-7 in first-place finishes with five championship and three school records. She won the 100 backstroke (55.44), 500 freestyle (4:58.91) and 200 backstroke (1:59.14) and swam on Luther's winning 200 medley (1:43.99), 800 freestyle (7:48.26), 400 medley (3:50.23) and 400 freestyle (3:34.48) relays. Slagel achieved an NCAA B-Cut in four of the seven events (400 medley relay, 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 medley relay) and currently ranks in the top-10 nationally in five events (100 and 200 backstrokes, 200 and 400 medley relays, 500 freestyle). Slagel is the daughter of Daniel and Karen Slagel.

Sund, a freshman from Cedar Falls, posted seven top-6 finishes at the Liberal Arts Championships while leading Luther to a runner-up team finish. He finished second in the 400 individual medley (4:14.29) and swam on 200 medley (1:36.73), 400 medley (3:33.66) and 800 free (7:10.11) relays, while placing third in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.47), fourth in the 200 free relay (1:26.79) and sixth in the 200 individual medley (1:59.24). Sund is the son of David and Penny Sund.

Serres, a sophomore from Platteville, Wis., placed 12th in the 3,000 meters at the Iowa State Classic with a school-record and Division III-leading time of 9:35.28. She obliterated the previous school record of 9:57, set in 1997 by Turena Johnson, and currently leads the Division III performance list by nearly six seconds. Serres is the daughter of Rob and Heidi Serres.
