Three Luther athletes were named athletes of the week this week by the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Evan Obert was named the wrestler of the week, with Jason Orvis the men's swimming athlete and Clare Slagel the women's swimming and diving athlete of the week.
Obert, a junior 133-pounder from Genoa, Wis., posted Luther's only victory in a 36-3 dual loss to Wartburg with a 3-1 sudden-victory win over top-ranked and two-time defending national champion Kenny Anderson. The result snapped Anderson's 51-match winning streak. He is the son of Troy Obert.
Orvis, a sophomore from Decorah, posted eight top-8 finishes as the Norse finished fourth at the Grinnell Invitational. He placed third in the 100 backstroke (54.18), 100 freestyle (49.49), 200 backstroke (2:01.14) and 200 freestyle relay (1:30.71), fourth in the 200 medley (1:41.36) and 400 freestyle (3:20.57) relays, sixth in the 400 medley relay (3:44.71) and seventh in the 50 freestyle (22.82). He is the son of Brad and Deb Orvis.
Slagel, a sophomore from Dubuque, played a part in seven top-4 finishes - including three wins - as the Norse took third at the Grinnell Invitational. She set a Grinnell pool record with a win in the 200 backstroke (2:06.23) and tied her own Grinnell pool mark with a win in the 100 backstroke (57.61). Slagel also swam on Luther's winning 200 freestyle (1:56.65) and runner-up 800 freestyle (8:04.17), 400 medley (4:01.42) and 200 medley (1:48.95) relays. She also took fourth in the 100 freestyle (54.04). She is the daughter of Daniel and Karen Slagel.
