For the third time of his career, Marty Mitchell, a 2009 graduate of Decorah High School, has earned all-conference honors in men's cross country for the Luther College Norse.
The top-15 runners at the conference championships are named all-conference.
The Iowa Conference Championships were held Saturday, Nov. 2. Mitchell placed sixth (25:36.6) out of 137 runners on the 8K course, located on the campus of Central College.
Mitchell also earned all-conference honors in 2012 (11th) and 2011 (fourth). He becomes the 15th runner in Luther history to earn all-conference honors three times.
Luther finished third in the team standings posting 64 points. Central College claimed its second consecutive conference title with 31 points, followed by Loras College with 53.
Luther's varsity men return to action Saturday, Nov. 16, when they will travel to the NCAA Division III Central Regional Championships hosted by St. Olaf College. The women's race will take place at 10 a.m., followed by the men's race that starts at noon.
The top two teams from each of the eight regions will earn automatic bids to the NCAA III National Cross Country Championships, for a total of 16. The final 16 teams will be selected as at-large bids, with no limit on the number of teams selected per region. Also, the top seven individuals not on a national qualifying team from each region will qualify for the NCAA III National Championships.
Hanover College has been selected to host the 2013 NCAA Division III cross country national championships. The event will be held Saturday, Nov. 23, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex, Hanover, Ind.
Luther has made 27 appearances at the NCAA III National Championships, finishing in the top-10 12 times and capturing the national title in 1985. Last year, Luther placed 24th at the national finale.
Mitchell is the son of Jason and Judy Mitchell of Decorah.
