Dear Editor:

At last month's Decorah Council meeting, Councilperson Julie Fischer suggested that the Pledge of Allegiance to the Earth be recited after the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. I thought it was a good idea being that we all should be aware of how small our planet is. We all have a responsibility to keeping it fit to live on.

I have had people (most of whom were not there) tell me, positively, that she thought it should be said instead of the Pledge to the Flag. No, that is not what she said. She requested that it be said in addition to the Pledge to the Flag.

This is how the Pledge to the Earth goes: I pledge allegiance to the Earth and all the life which it supports, one planet in our care, irreplaceable, with sustenance and respect for all. It is not anti-American.
