Vernon Harvey Vine was born Dec. 21, 1927, to Ernest and Alma Christina (Hanson) Vine on the family farm in Madison Township. Vernon was baptized in 1928 and confirmed in 1943, at First Lutheran Church. He received his early education at the country school just down the road. Growing up Vernon enjoyed being a 4-H member showing livestock at the fair. He worked on a North Dakota wheat farm as a part of the harvesting crew. Vernon served in the US Army from 1950-1952. He was a radio repairman in the Army. Vernon returned home to work the family farm in Canoe Township. Vernon had been a member of the IOOF for 60 years, and a member of the Winneshiek County Cattleman’s Association. He also belonged to the Bernatz-Symonds American Legion Post No. 163 in Decorah. He served on the Winneshiek Coop Board, Hauge Cemetery Board and served on the Hauge Church Parish Council. Vernon enjoyed driving his John Deere Gator around his two farms. He loved farming from the days of planting corn with a horse-drawn, two-row planter to a four-row planter pulled by a cab tractor. Retirement found Vernon driving around the countryside talking about the farms his family lived on and the barns that he helped build as a teenager. He was proud they were still standing today. He enjoyed going to Army reunions. He also found time for traveling from the west coast to the east coast. Happiness for Vernon was when he married Darlene (Thompson) Sacquitne Nov. 20, 1982, at Hauge Lutheran Church. He was very proud of getting a ready-made family of kids and grandkids. Vernon loved being a grandpa, hearing stories and seeing pictures of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s adventures. You could tell he was proud of his nieces and nephews, as he would tell stories on how he influenced their lives.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene Vine; son, Reynold (Sue) Sacquitne, Maple Grove, Minn.; daughter, Robin (Marvin) Althoff, Guttenberg; son, Raymond “Turtle” (Kelly) Sacquitne, Decorah; and daughter, Roxanne Lueschow, Decorah; grandchildren: Jenni (Jason) Neiberger, Ragen (Jason) Jacobs, Jake Sacquitne, Serenity (Kevin) Moffett, Trinity Lueschow, Matt Althoff, Kenneth Logan Lueschow, Isaac Althoff and Lydia Dotzler; great-grandchildren: Cameron, Kylie, Jared, Ethan, Carter and Blair; brother, Ernest Vine, Burlington, Wash.; sisters-in law: Helen Vine, Decorah, LaVerne Tiernan, Decorah, Ruth Thompson, Decorah, Margaret Swanson, West Richland, Wash. and Beverly (Ed) Dickman, Jean, Nev; and many nieces and nephews.
