Virginia M. Volkering, 90, of Decorah, died Saturday morning, Nov. 30, 2013, at Seasons Hospice, Joy Forsberg's Foster Home, in Rochester, Minn. Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, with Rev. Stacey Nalean-Carlson officiating. Burial was in Russell Cemetery in rural Decorah. Visitation began at noon Wednesday, one hour before the service, at Fjelstul Funeral Home. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah served the family. Online condolences may be made at fjelstul.com. Hymns were "Welcome to My World," "We Rise Again" and "The Circle of Life." Casket bearers were Ryan Holmes, Cory Holmes, Colin Rooney, Callie Rooney, Tim Rooney and Nicole Benzing. Interment was at Russell Cemetery in Decorah.
Virginia Marian (Johnson) Volkering was born Oct. 8, 1923, in Decorah, the daughter of Anton and Jennie (Brandt) Johnson. She graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1942. Virginia was united in marriage to Gerald J. Volkering Feb. 7, 1948, in Decorah. This union was blessed with two daughters, Sheila and Janie. She worked at the Decorah Public Library for 28 years, the last 20 years as librarian.
Virginia is survived by her two daughters, Sheila (Tim) Rooney of Cedar Rapids and Janie Holmes of Rochester, Minn.; five grandchildren: Ryan Holmes of Byron, Minn., Cory Holmes of Rochester, Colin Rooney in Cedar Rapids, Noel (Kim) Rooney in Atlanta, Ga. and Callie Rooney of Cedar Rapids; and one great-grandson, Quinten.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gerald, Nov. 3, 1995; and her three sisters: Almeda Barth, Lillian Noecker and Aldora Snow.
