Nancy K. Kowitz, 60, of Sparta, Wis., was taken early from life Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at Rolling Hills Rehab Center in Sparta, Wis., with her loving family by her side.

Nancy was born July 31, 1953, to Darrell and "Ruth" Lillian (Mortensen) Riggs in Oakdale, Wis. She graduated from Tomah High School in 1971 and went on to get her nursing degree. Nursing was a true calling for Nancy, an occupation she loved. She was so passionate for her job that she went on to obtain her master's degree to become a nurse practitioner, and worked at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center. She was truly a giving and caring person who would do everything for anyone or anything. Nancy married Jeff Kowitz in 2002 and loved living on the farm outside of Sparta. She had a passion for the outdoors where she adored being with her dogs, doing yard work and running. In her quiet time she enjoyed quilting, but her real adoration was for her son and husband. Nancy had a spirit for living; she always faced her challenges in life head on with passion and endurance. When she found out about her medical condition, A.L.S., she fought it valiantly until the very end. Her family and friends will always embrace her strength and cherish the love she had.

Nancy is survived by her husband of 12 years, Jeff; her son, Ian Huber of Trempealeau, Wis.; sister, Alice (LaVerne) Hageman of Fort Atkinson; brothers, Bruce (Betty) Riggs of Oakdale and Tim (Karen) Riggs of Tomah, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Dale Riggs of Menomonie Falls, Wis.; along with many nieces, nephews other relatives and dear friends.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth and Darrell Riggs; and her brother Frank Riggs.

Nancy's family would like to thank Rolling Hills, Gundersen Hospice, and Home Instead Caregivers for the exceptional care given to Nancy during a very difficult time.

A celebration of Nancy's life will be announced at a later date. Memorials may be given in Nancy's name to the Gundersen Hospice or to a charity of your choice. The Torkelson Page-Smith Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be offered at
