Lester Leidahl, 86, of Decorah, died Thursday, July 31, 2014, at Wellington Place Nursing Home in Decorah. Services were at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, with Rev. Allen Vik officiating. CD music was “Amazing Grace” and “Go Rest High on that Mountain,” by Vince Gill. Special memories were offered by Wayne Dow. Casket bearers were Rob Sweet, Matt Dow, Tom Roney, John Roney, Chad Garden, Troy Berry, Shane Sweet, Anthony Groh, Jon Aske and John Youngblood. Honorary casket bearers were Norris Youngblood, Don Nelson, Pat Corrigan and Lyle Kratz. Interment was at Phelps Cemetery in Decorah. Arrangements were handled by Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Decorah.

Lester Odell Leidahl was born Feb. 15, 1928, the son of Alice Leidahl, in Winneshiek County. Lester attended country school in Winneshiek County. He was united in marriage to Harriet Brown June 27, 1953, in Spring Grove, Minn. For the 35 years of Lester’s working life, he was a self-employed truck driver before retiring in 2000. He enjoyed his horses, fishing, gardening and especially his grandchildren. Lester was always willing to help out anyone who needed help.

Lester is survived by his children: Linda (Duane) Roney, Charles City; Cliff (Paula) Sweet, Salt Lake City, Utah; Elaine (Wayne) Dow, McKinney, Texas; Wanda (Duane) Garden, Acme, Pa.; Diane (Ken) Berry, Sparta, Wis.; and Sharon Groh, Charles City. Lester also is survived by 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, along with many cousins and friends.  

Lester was preceded in death by his mother, Alice Leidahl; his wife, Harriet Leidahl, Jan. 30, 2010; son-in-law, Ken Betty; two grandsons, Jared Sweet and Travis Berry.
