Leonard Tietz, 82, of Decorah, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at his home. Services were at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in Decorah, with Pastor Mark Kvale officiating. Organist was Paul Bruvold. Hymns were "On Eagles Wings," "The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art." Military rites at cemetery were by Helof Holm VFW Chapter No. 1977. Interment was at Washington Prairie Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in memory of Leonard to the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, 1725 Washington Prairie Road, or to Winneshiek County Hospice, 901 Montgomery Street, Decorah, IA 52101. Honorary casketbearers were all of Leonard's fishing and coffee buddies and birthday club members: Bob and Pat Dotseth, Bob and Sadie Sersland, Norman and Darlene Dickman, Bud and Kay Ihde, Jim and Bev Dohse, Lee and Shirley Vangsness, Dervin and Louella Ludeking, Ron Ludeking, Lowell and Phyllis Drenth, Albert and Donna Ashbacher, Roger and Carol Hammel and Karol Sersland. Casketbearers were Galen Tietz, Randy Tietz, Jordan Tietz, KyleTietz, Daiton Tietz and Alex Tietz. Arrangements were handled by Schluter - Balik Funeral Home, Decorah.
Leonard Martin Tietz was born March 23, 1931, the son of Walter and Elsie (Martins) Tietz, in Luana. Leonard was baptized at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Luana, and was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. Leonard grew up in the Luana and Frankville areas. He graduated from Postville High School in 1949. Leonard served in the US Air Force from 1952-1955. He married Lavonne Schave at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco June 1, 1958. To this union, two sons were born, Galen and Randy. They made their home in Frankville Township, where they farmed and raised beef cattle and hogs for over 30 years. Even after retirement, Leonard enjoyed helping on the farm during planting and harvesting time and also helped build log homes for 10 years. Leonard served on various boards at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church and served many years as a trustee of the Frankville Fire Department. He also served 18 years on the Winneshiek Mutual Insurance Association Board. Leonard obtained his pilot license in 1964 and enjoyed flying with the Decorah Flying Club for over 15 years. Leonard loved to go fishing in Minnesota with friends and in Canada with his two sons. Leonard and Lavonne made two trips to Germany to visit where he was stationed during his time in the Air Force. They also spent many years going to Arizona for the winter months and enjoyed seeing family, friends and neighbors there. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a party and a trip to Hawaii with their children and grandchildren. In later years, Leonard enjoyed spending time with friends and fishing buddies at the Family Table Restaurant having morning coffee.
Leonard is survived by his wife, Lavonne Tietz, Decorah; two sons, Galen (Melanie) Tietz, Decorah and Randy (Joyce) Tietz, Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren: Jordan and Daiton Tietz and Kyle and Alex Tietz.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Elsie (Martins) Tietz; and one granddaughter, Danica Rae Tietz.
