Kathryn “Kay” Spilde, 83, of Decorah, died Sunday, July 20, 2014, at the Winneshiek Medical Center, in Decorah. Services were at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 24, at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in Decorah, with Mark Kvale officiating. Organist was Paul Bruvold. Soloist was Hub Christen (“The Lord’s Prayer”). Hymns were “Here I am Lord,” “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and  “How Great Thou Art.” Interment was at Washington Prairie Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah. Casket bearers were Arlin Hanson, John Rodecap, Phil Halse, Dale Olson, Dick Trytten and Vic Fye. Arrangements were handled by Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Decorah.

Kathryn Virginia (Hovey) Spilde was born Dec. 27, 1930, to Philip and Hannah (Hanson) Hovey on the family farm near Cresco. She grew up in rural Cresco and graduated from Cresco High School in 1949.  She was united in marriage to Vernon Spilde April 18, 1950, at the Orleans Lutheran Church, rural Ridgeway. To this union, five children were born: Cheryl, Linda, Craig, Corinne and Diane. In earlier years, Kathryn helped Vernon on the farm. Kathryn was employed at the Decorah Newspapers, Farm Service and worked for many years in the attorney offices of John Sproatt and Dennis Larson. For many years, she kept books for the Winneshiek County Fair and assisted her husband in his job as fair manager. She also served as treasurer of the Nordic Fest Board, Ladies Aid and Aase Haugen Auxiliary. She enjoyed camping, sewing, square dancing, playing cards and spending time with her family and friends. Kathryn enjoyed her many travels with all. A camping phrase that always brought a laugh was “this sure is salty – but I like it that way.” She enjoyed attending Luther College and high school sporting events with her husband. She was always so proud that she maintained her original hair color all these years.

Kathryn is survived by her husband, Vernon Spilde, Decorah; children: Craig (Jeanette) Spilde, Decorah; Corinne (Mark) Brase, Fairfield; and Diane (Charlie) Smock, Garden City Kan.; grandchildren: Mallory Dignin, Stephen Dignin, Aubrey (Brent) Miller, Erica Spilde, Daniel (Beth) Brase, Michelle (Allan) Hines, Nicholas (Marissa) Smock and Amber (Zach) Ryan; great-grandchildren: Madeline, Megan and Micah Brase, Hunter and Hilda Hines and Hank Ryan; brother, Ken (Roseann) Hovey, Atkins; brother-in-law, Roger (Barb) Spilde, Moorhead, Minn.; sister-in-law, Colleen Hovey, Cresco; son-in-law, Mike (Cheryl Skrypez) Dignin, Little Canada, Minn.

Kathryn was preceded in death by parents, Philip and Hannah (Hanson) Hovey; her father- and mother-in-law, Iver and Hilda Spilde; daughters, Cheryl Dignin and Linda Spilde in infancy; great-granddaughter, Emma Brase in infancy; three brothers: Harlan (Norma) Hovey, Maynard Hovey and Philip (Rose) Hovey; three sisters: Wilma (Galin) Barth, Phyllis Hovey in infancy and Carol Hovey in infancy.
