John Christian Sorlien, 87, of Portland, Ore., passed away Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, in Gresham, Ore. Graveside services are Friday, Feb. 19, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore. Condolences can be sent to Ann Sorlien 3315 S. E. 157th St. Portland, OR 97236.

He was born April 7, 1922 in Hesper, to Olvin and Selma (Burreson) Sorlien. He graduated from Luther College March of 1943 as part of the V7 program. After Navy training at New York City he was commissioned Lt. (j.g) John Sorlien, serving on an LST in the Mediterranean for 16 months. He was a communications officer serving with invasions of Italy and southern France. When he returned to the states he was stationed at Portland, Ore. John married Anna May Lettow on Aug. 11, 1945 in Portland, Ore. Fall of 1946 John was teaching at Olivia, Minn. They moved to Portland where he worked as an accountant for a variety of grain companies from 1947 until his retirement in 1984. He was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He enjoyed woodworking and was able to build his own home. John was an accomplished musician, playing the organ and accordion, and was active for many years with the church.

He is survived by his wife, Ann of Portland, Ore.; sons, Peter Sorlien(Jean) of Fairview, Ore. and Steven Sorlien (Joyce) of Tualatin, Ore.; grandchildren Holly Jesse, Daniel Sorlien, Scott Sorlien, Brian Sorlien, Matthew Sorlien and Eric Sorlien and five great grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother, Paul (Sandra) Sorlien of Underwoord; sisters: Naomi Jasmer of Willmar, Minn.; Grace (Norbert) Johnson of St. Ansgar; Ruth (E.J.) Larson of Austin, Minn.; Lois Fossen of Minnetonka, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. S.O.(Selma) Sorlien and his sister, Eunice Chomicz.
