She married Leonard "Whimpy" Wicks at Assumption Catholic Church in Canton, Minn., Sept. 12, 1964. She and Leonard settled on acreage in Kendallville and during their 38 years of marriage created a happy home for their six children and her sister Mary. She was a hired girl/fry cook, a production worker at Collins Radio and an administrative assistant for both Opportunity Homes and The Laura Ingalls-Wilder Museum. She was strongly involved with the TOPS group and taught CCD for many years. Joan had immense faith in God, an enduring love of family and a drive to socialize and make new friends. She also had a huge affinity for all things frog (especially the stuffed variety), which paired nicely with her incredible sense of silliness, which created smiles all around her.
