Iona Finholt, 95, of Decorah, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah. Funeral services were at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 14, at Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah, with Rev. Bryan Robertson officiating. Organist was Kathy Murray. Soloist was Elea Uhl ("Rock of Ages," "The Lord's Prayer"). Hymns were "Beautiful Savior," "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Joy to the World." Casketbearers were Mike Hall, Scott Hall, Todd Brown, Jeff Helland, Kyle Helland and Roger Huinker. Interment is at Phelps Cemetery, Decorah, in the spring. Arrangements were handled by Schluter - Balik Funeral Home, Decorah.

Iona Beatrice (Grindeland) was born Dec. 6, 1918, the daughter of Bennie and Mary (Sanden) Grindeland, in Highland Township, north of Decorah. Iona was baptized Jan. 15, 1919, and confirmed in her faith at the Highland Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church by Pastor T. O. Tolo July 31, 1932. Iona attended rural country schools in Highland township. She attended one year of high school in Mabel, Minn. Iona worked for the ASCS office in Decorah for many years. She was united in marriage to Ray Merton Finholt the son of Helmer and Hattie (Barth) Finholt July 8, 1943, at the Highland Lutheran Church by Pastor William T. Hexom. Iona was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church, where she was active in Lutheran Church Women, Ladies Circle and the VFW Auxiliary. Iona made many quilts for Decorah Lutheran Church and many Norwegian and other dolls for many people.

Iona is survived by her son, Randall Dean Finholt, Tempe, Ariz.; one sister, Orbell Hall, Decorah; along with many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews.

Iona was preceded in death by her parents, Bennie and Mary (Sanden) Grindeland; husband, Ray Finholt; son, Ronald Lee Finholt; and two daughters in infancy; three brothers: Kenneth (Edna) Grindeland, Berdell Grindeland and Bennie Grindeland in infancy; one sister, Cleona in infancy; father- and mother-in-law, Helmer and Hattie Finholt; two brothers-in-law, William Hall and Vern (Helen) Finholt.
